No “unli” rice, just “half-rice”
IN BINMALEY SOON
BINMALEY—Restaurants and eateries here will soon be required to offer just half a cup of rice – instead of the usual one cup or even unlimited rice servings now popular in the Philippines – as the town makes a bid towards minimizing wastage and contribute to the goal of food security.
Vice Mayor Pedro Merrera, presiding officer of the municipal council, said the proposed ordinance on the regulation was set for public hearing last week and aimed for passage soon.
Merrera said this is in support of the national government’s thrust to eliminate, if not to totally eradicate, rice wastage due to unconsumed food by diners in eateries.
Once approved, restaurants here will have to put up a signage “We Serve Half-Rice” in a conspicuous place in their establishment and violators will be fined P2,500.
Presidential Proclamation No. 494 declared the year 2013 as the National Year of Rice.
The National Food Authority Western Pangasinan Provincial Office in Lingayen has cited that a study undertaken by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute indicate that there are about two tablespoons of cooked rice every meal that are wasted by every Filipino.
In 2010, wasted rice in the country was equivalent to 13 percent of the total rice imports of the same year amounting to P6.2 billion or the consumption of nearly 2.6 million Filipinos in a year.–Eva Visperas
