Four local players grab top spots
3rd PANGASINAN AGE GROUP CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Lingayen — Four Pangasinense wood pushers clinched the championships in four out of seven age categories of the recently concluded 3rdPangasinan Age Group Chess Championships sponsored by the provincial government.
The chess tournament, held on October 19-20, formed part of the Pangasinan Chess Festival that saw 202 chess players competing in seven age groups categories, namely: eight and under, 10 and under, 12 and under, 14 and under, 16 and under, 18 and under and 20 and under.
This year’s Pangasinan champions are: Chester Neil Reyes (Bugallon), 8 and under; Mark Vincent Limocon (Manaoag), 12 and under; Jerome Junio, (San Carlos City), 14 and under; Cherry Ann Mejia (San Jacinto), 18 and under.
Marvin Limocon (Manaoag) and Mark Prince Aquino (San Nicolas) placed second in 12 and under and18 and under categories, respectively.
Third placers include: Ronald Allan Velasco (San Carlos City), 8 and under; Hadji Ray Caalim (Anda), 10 and under; Juan Miguel del Prado (Urdaneta City), 12 and under; Romy Fagon (Urdaneta City), 18 and under; and FM Haridas Pascua (Mangatarem), 20 and under.
More Pangasinenses also placed in fourth to 10thplaces.
Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. led the awarding of trophies, cash prizes and certificates of recognition to the winners during the closing ceremony held last October 20.
The governor announced during the closing program that the provincial government will launch the Chess Academy in summer of 2014 to hone chess playing skills and strategies of Pangasinenses in the grassroots level.
Pangasinan Chess League President Juan Vicente Sison said young players from Lingayen, Binmaley, Malasiqui, Burgos, Manaog, San Fabian, San Jacinto, Sta. Barbara, Calasiao, Mangatarem, Dasol, Bolinao, Anda, Laoac, Bugallon, Rosales and cities of Alaminos, San Carlos, Dagupan and Urdaneta were joined by others from Tarlac, Zambales, La Union, Ilocos Sur, Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Cavite, Baguio City and cities in the NCR.
Two more tournaments, the Pangasinan Open Chess Championships and Gov. Espino Chess Championship, will be played on November and December as part of Pangasinan Chess Festival. (PIO/Mark Gerry Naval Oblanca)
