THE LONGEST WAIT

LINGAYEN—After almost two years of waiting for its completion, the residents of Calasiao and regular commuters thru the town can finally heave a sigh of relief when the town’s new Villamil Bridge is opened to traffic on Nov.30 this year.

The bridge’s date of completion was confirmed by Marietta Mendoza, officer-in-charge of the 4th Highway Engineering district, based on the assurance given by the contractor Foundation Specialist, when she appeared before the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) last Monday.

The project costing P99 million funded by a grant from the Spanish government began construction in January last year.

The SP inquired into the status of the Villamil Bridge because trade and commerce in the town have already been severely affected since the bridge was closed.

She explained that the long delay in the completion of the bridge was caused by the request of the local government of Calasiao for the inclusion of a pedestrian bridge as well as an underpass as added variations of the projects, after the construction had started.

These variations needed additional funding and it took time for final plans to be approved by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) central office in Manila, she added.

She said the contractor is already completing the construction of the slabs of the main bridge while the construction of the additional underpass that empties into the market is proceeding on schedule.
