Barangay captain wounded, pal killed in gun attack
CALASIAO—The attempted zero fatality objective of the local PNP command for the duration of the campaign period is now but a dream.
After attending the peace covenant signing for candidates in the Oct. 28 barangay election, an unopposed barangay captain re-electionist was wounded while one of his aides was killed in front of the municipal hall here Friday before noon.
Longos Barangay Captain Majadiva Mesina and his companions were on board a van when three unidentified motorcycle-riding men shot them.
Mesina was wounded and one of his companions whose identity was not immediately known died.
A member of the Pangasinan Public Safety Company responded and fired back at the assailants resulting in a hot pursuit operation along the riverbanks of Sitio Pandayan, Barangay Gabon here.
Mones said one of the suspects was clearly hit as evidenced by traces of blood at the where the suspects began shooting.
A follow up report sent by Senior Supt. Marlou Chan, police director of Pangasinan, indicated that one of the suspects was arrested. He was identified as Arnulfo Calaunan, 48, US citizen working as medical assistant in Pacific Health, San Francisco, USA and native of Barangay Talibaew this town.
The police confiscated from his possession one caliber .45 pistol.—Eva Visperas
