BARANGAY POLLS

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan Oct. 23 (PNA)—Amid an appeal by Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. to barangay candidates to help maintain a peaceful election, a 3,000-man security force from the Pangasinan police provincial office (PPO), police regional office 1 and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) have been deployed throughout the province to secure the barangay election tomorrow October 28.

Senior Supt. Marlou Chan, provincial director of PPO said that the total complement has made it possible to maintain a ratio of one to two policemen for every polling center depending on the size and population of the precincts.

Pangasinan has a total of 1, 199 polling precincts.

Chan is confident that the number is enough to protect the ballots while providing security for the board of election tellers and the voters against possible violence during and after the election.

While several shooting incidents were reported in the past weeks, he said all were not election-related.

To further reinforce security measures through Oplan Sitan and Oplan Bakal, warrants will continue to be served to firearms with expired licenses.

Meanwhile, a special investigation task group was created to investigate the shooting incident in Calasiao town.

Besides their election duties, the policemen are still performing their regular responsibilities according to Chan.

Governor Amado Espino Jr. asks the Pangasinenses specifically the candidates to make the barangay election clean and peaceful by considering that their rivals were their neighbors and even family members and relatives. (With report from Hilda M. Austria)
