Sto. Tomas launches “Trash Savers” program
STO. TOMAS—The municipal government here is launching on September 16 its “Trash Savers Volunteers Program” aimed at strengthening participation in the town’s solid waste management system.
Under the new program, trash saver volunteers will get a passbook, similar to those issued by a bank, where they can track the recyclable materials they have turned over to the local government.
Some 3,000 students of the four elementary schools and six high schools in the town are participating in this project as well as elder townsfolks.
Mayor Timoteo “Dick” Villar III said the passbook concept will also introduce the value of saving to children.
“They will learn to save while they are still young,” Villar said.
Students are also encouraged to turn over to the municipal government tetra packs and other plastic materials that are not normally sold to junk stores and in return corresponding value of school supplies will be given them as incentive.
“What’s very important here is there would be no trash scattered in our town,” Villar said.–Eva Visperas
