BOY Scouts from Region 1 will converge at the Ecotourism Park in Estanza, Lingayen on October 12-16 for the Regional Jamboree which is expected to have some 5,000 participants.

Gov. Amado Espino Jr., appointed Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) regional chairman last August 20, said the provincial government is also eyeing to establish a BSP Regional office in Pangasinan as he vowed to lobby for more financial support from the Department of Education for initiatives that will increase membership.

Region 1 currently ranks third in the country in terms of membership, but Regional Scout Director Imelda Samson noted that membership in general has decreased.

Samson cited the removal of scouting from the curriculum in schools, financial constraints and the limited trainings of the scout executives as reasons for the decline.

“The parent does not see the goodness that their children can get in the scouting such as the skills and values,” she added.

As an initial step to revive interest in scouting, Espino organized an orientation seminar held September 10-14 at the Pangasinan Skills and Sports Development Center for elementary and secondary scout executives of the different divisions in the province as well as Dagupan City.

“Basically this orientation is to capacitate the leaders here about the basic of scouting,” said one of the trainers, Rafael Rubio, the Education Program Supervisor of Region 3.

Meanwhile, Samson urged the BSP councils to conduct fundraising activities such as marathons and dinner-for-a cause.–Johanne R. Macob
