LEARNING FROM THE BOOKS

The Dagupan City government is reaching out to improve the literacy rate among its residents by encouraging them to read books and newspapers.

To achieve this, a mobile library– made from a refurbished container van – will be going around the barangays in Dagupan to encourage reading and keep the value of books alive in the communities, especially among children.

“We believe that there are still a lot of things to learn from books that could not be learned with the new gadgets,” said Rufina Meneses, city librarian.

The library will carry mostly children’s books and some newspapers and Filipino pocket books for the adults.

During the launch of the mobile library last September 16, Mayor Belen Fernandez led the storytelling of Si Langgam at si Tipaklong with 40 street children as her audience.

Fernandez, in an interview, said storytelling is particularly important for street children because it introduces reading as an enjoyable activity and it imparts values to them.

“This is also a way to inspire them (children) to go back to school”, the mayor added.

The mobile library will be going around 29 barangays from Mondays to Fridays.

The two island barangays, Lomboy and Salapingao, which is not accessible for the library van, will instead be visited by officers of the city library to promote book reading among children and adults.–Dada Austria
