UCAAP INTER-COLLEGIATE BASKETBALL

THE Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU) Dukes broke early in the first quarter and continued their dazzling show up to the final buzzer to overwhelm archrival University of Luzon Tigers, 102-80, at the start of the UCAAP Inter-Collegiate Basketball Championship on September 4 at the Dagupan People’s Astrodome.

Dukes triumvirate George Alipio, Julius Palaganas and Julius Tiburcio fueled a dominant force in the first two quarters, padding a 17-point lead at intermission, 52-35, to as many as 33 points halfway in the last juncture, 90-57, to take the fight out from the hapless Tigers.

“Retaining our winning ways will be our target to reassert our supremacy in Pangasinan caging and it paid off,” said LNU head coach Angel Gumarang. “I’m so proud of my boys and the whole Dukes coaching staff,” he added.

Tiburcio drilled a game high 18 points while Palaganas and Alipio added 15 and 12 points, respectively.

UPANG VS. UL

The Tigers suffered another defeat when it faced the UPang-PHINMA Flames in the succeeding game.

The Flames used a fiery start with fast-break plays and a trey orchestrated by wily point-guard Marlon Ramos to lead the first period by 14 points, 24-10. They continued their lead by eight points at the second quarter, 48-40, and maintained their front at the third with the same gap, 72-64.

But they suddenly found themselves in jeopardy when the Tigers went on a rampage at the fourth, leveling the game at 76-76 with 4 minutes and 48 seconds remaining.

The Flames got their groove back and won the game, 93-84, with Ramos and Jioni Laca at the helm pumping in a game highs 22 and 19 points, respectively.

“It is hard work, patience, good defense and especially prayers that caused our victory to the game,” Flames head coach Jay Ronquillo triumphantly said.

The Flames and Dukes will collide on September 11 at 1:00 p.m. at Dagupan People’s Astrodome and the winner will notch the first championship slot in the best-of-three finals series.–JAGJr.
