UCAAP INTER-COLLEGIATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

THE Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU) Dukes proved their true primacy anew in Pangasinan college school caging by beating its archenemy UPang-PHINMA Flames twice in-a-row, 102-94, 96-75, in the UCAAP Inter-Collegiate Basketball Championship on September 11 and 12 held at the Dagupan People’s Astrodome and at Divine World Academy gym, respectively, to clinch the first slot for the championship.

The Dukes will face the victor of the Tigers-Flames matches scheduled on Sept. 19 and 25.

The finals will be a best-of-three series format

The Tapuac-based boys of Atty. Gonzalo Duque dominated right away on both occasions and led by as many as 26 points in the first encounter, 89-63, and 21 in the second game, 85-64, and held their ground up to the end to card a three win, no loss record.

“Although we won the first game, actually I was not satisfied with the result because we led by as many 26 points in the fourth and suddenly we collapsed at the important homestretch,” said Dukes head coach Angel Gumarang.

“We fixed the flaws in the second game and won the match this time convincingly,” he added.

The Dukes quartet of George Alipio, Julius Tiburcio, Mariano Catabay and Llyod Quisay came in double figures, averaging the two games with 16, 14.5, 13.5 and 12.5 points, respectively, while the best of the Flames was Jioni Laca with an average of 32 points against the Dukes and with a tournament high of 43.–JAGJr.
