Earlier, the Philippine Team trounced China in the Asian Mathematics Tilt in Hong Kong last July 24-28.

Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. commended the young Math wizards, saying these children, aged 8 to 14, have given so much pride not just for Pangasinan but also for the country.

The twin success, according to the governor, is resounding proof that Pangasinan is not only the home of young sports champions but a sanctuary of geniuses as well.

The young mathematicians paid a courtesy call on the governor last September 19.

Concesa Rapacon, head of the Mathematics Trainers Guild, said all the kids went through series of rigid trainings before they competed internationally.

“First we sent letters to different schools for us to hold a qualifying examination in their schools for students who excel in Mathematics and once they passed the exam they were admitted to the training,” Rapacon said, adding that the training covered 12 sessions with a series of examinations, and an in-house training in Manila.

Further, Rapacon stressed the importance of support group in training Math wizards referring to parents who need to constantly encourage their kids and tell them that Math is an interesting and easy subject that requires focus and intense concentration.

In the 9th International Mathematics Contest in Singapore (with 11 participating countries), Team Philippines, which was composed of 232 delegates, 8 of whom were Pangasinenses, emerged victorious and dethroned China, the former champion.

Six participating countries, on the other hand, joined the Asian Mathematics Tilt in Hong Kong but the Philippine Team, comprised of 261 delegates with 13 Pangasinenses, outwitted them all and brought home the coveted over-all championship crown.

Aside from China, the Philippine Team in the two championship tilts bested other countries like Singapore, Indonesia, Iran, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, India, Thailand, Malaysia and Macau.

Each member was awarded with a cash token by the provincial government during their courtesy call to the governor. (PIO/Ruby R. Bernardino)
