Dengue cases down in September; but alert still up
LINGAYEN—After an alarming 60 percent increase from January to August, the number of reported dengue cases has dropped this month at 160 so far compared to 389 in the same month last year.
But the Provincial Health Office (PHO) maintains the alert level and reiterated its call to all communities to rid places of mosquito breeding grounds.
Dr. Anna Ma. Teresa De Guzman, PHO chief, made the report during a recent meeting with Liga ng mga Barangay chairmen for the distribution of spot maps of their respective towns that identify focus areas for clean-up and information drives.
The barangay officials were also provided with larvacides, insecticides, and olysetts to be used for misting, fogging activities.
As of September 16, the PHO listed 5,548 cases since the start of the year with 24 deaths.
In the same period last year, there were 3,461 cases and 15 deaths.
CALASIAO
The town of Calasiao is being closely monitored by the PHO for consistently being in the top 10 areas with dengue cases. It recorded the most number at 284 dengue cases with two casualties this year.
Dr. Jesus Arturo De Vera, municipal health officer, said the number is the highest among the cases recorded in recent years. Last year, there were 199 dengue cases and no fatality.
De Vera said the onset of the rainy season that caused serious flooding in the many parts of the municipality prompted a sudden increase.
He said during the summer season, particularly during the months of April and May, the town had zero dengue case.
San Fabian listed the highest number of death toll with five, followed by San Carlos City with three, and others with two are Sta. Barbara, Manaoag, and Sta. Maria.
Other towns in the dengue watchlist are Agno, Sual, San Jacinto, Pozorrubio, Sison, Urdaneta City, Sta. Maria, and Dagupan City.— Johanne R. Macob with report from Dada Austria
