THE Association of Dagupan Hotels and Inns (ADHI) expressed support to the city council’s proposed resolution to ban minors unaccompanied by elders from their establishments.

Fred Quinto, president of ADHI, said their group with more than 20 members, is ready to implement the rule once the ordinance is passed.

“They have a very positive response,” said Councilor Jose Netu Tamayo, author of the proposed ordinance that is undergoing public hearings.

Tamayo sponsored the measure to address the increasing rate of teenage pregnancy among Dagupeños and students from other areas studying in the city based on the reports of the office of the Population Commission (PopCom).

The PopCom report cited about 300 teenage moms recorded so far this year.

Quinto said banning minors from their establishments would not affect their bottom-line because he believes “not even one percent of these teenage pregnancies happened in our establishments since these are mere students without money to spend”.

City Population Officer Alex De Venecia said a recent survey conducted in 28 of the 31 barangays show there are at least 234 teenage mothers aged 14 to 19 years old.

The survey also revealed that the young mothers mostly came from poor families and still live with their parents.–Eva Visperas
