A P2.6-million fund has been allocated by the Dagupan school board for the training of the city’s young athletes who will compete in the Region 1 Athletic Association (IRAA) Meet next year.

With the funding, Mayor Belen Fernandez called on the athletes to train harder and longer and make the city proud by bringing home medals.

The fund will be spent by the City School Division starting with the district and division meets that will qualify Dagupan’s representatives for the regional games.

Noting that the Dagupan team has been landing only in 7th place over the past years, Fernandez asked Edilberto Abalos, program education supervisor and in charge of school sports in the city school’s division, to put the local athletes on longer training.

Abalos reported that Dagupan athletes are participating only in 14 events where its delegation have a greater chance of winning medals including swimming, gymnastics, some athletic events, taekwondo, boxing and basketball.

“We used to be the regional champion in swimming as well as in boxing and basketball,” said Abalos.

Abalos thanked the mayor for committing to restore the Dagupan City Pool Site, the only Olympic-sized swimming pool in Pangasinan to serve as the venue for training local swimmers.

The mayor has also committed to fully support the plan of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) headed by Atty. Liberato Reyna, regional chairman, to stage amateur boxing bouts in the city to provide a career path for potential boxers.

Abalos said last year, Dagupan produced a boxer who went on to compete in the Palarong Pambansa.
