LEARNING the lesson from the fire that gutted eight classrooms of the West Central Elementary School 1 two weeks ago, public schools in Dagupan will finally get fire extinguishers after the school board allocated P600,000 for the purchase of the equipment.

The local Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), following an inspection of schools before the start of classes last June, already noted that many do not have fire extinguishers.

City Schools Superintendent Gloria Torres said she has also asked Sr. Inspector Ferdinand Formacion, fire marshal of Dagupan, to conduct further inspection on the electrical connections of all schools in the city.

Initial investigation indicate that the fire at the West Central School 1 was possibly due to a defective orbit electric fan connected to a suspected substandard electrical wiring.

The BFP is still awaiting the final report of the laboratory examination on the debris gathered from the fire site undertaken by its regional office in San Fernando City, La Union.

“There is a need to check on the electrical connections in every school rooms, especially on those schools which were used as quarters during the Palarong Pambansa in 2012 where electrical connections may have been installed in a hurry to beat the deadline,” Torres said.

The burned school rooms were among those used as quarters for athletes in the Palarong Pambansa hosted by Pangasinan.
