ALCALA—Himself losing 78 pounds (lbs) over a four-month period during the election period, this town’s mayor is encouraging employees of the municipal government to shape up as well through a health wellness program he initiated.

Mayor Ryan Paolo Mencias, who won a first term in the May election, has launched a “biggest loser” campaign, offering cash prizes to those who will lose at least 10 lbs by December.

The 32-year old Mencias wore a size 46 prior to the May elections and he has trimmed down to size 34 through a “no rice diet and Zumba dance exercise”.

“They (municipal employees) can do it using strong will and determination,” he said during the local television talk show Deretsahan on USATV cable.

Mencias initiated a fitness program in the municipality encouraging employees to join a Zumba dance exercise at the town park every Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday.

The “Biggest Loser” was a popular reality television show two years ago that featured obese contestants going through rigid exercises and dietary regimen to lose weight.  The participant that logged the highest weight loss percentage became the winner.

For his own “biggest loser” campaign, the winner will get P10,000 while a consolation prize of P1,000 will go to each of those who will lose at least 10 lbs. by the municipal government’s Christmas party.—Eva Visperas
