BANI Mayor Gwen Palafox-Yamamoto vows to prioritize the development of tourism in her town as she begins her first three-year term.

Yamamoto, in her first media interview after the election during the KBP forum, said she plans to improve the potential tourist sites in Bani, particularly the nature spots.

She cited the white sand beaches, mangrove farms, caves and the well-known ‘Umbrella rock’.

To kick off her plans, Yamamoto reorganized the municipal tourism office, which was inactive during the previous administration.

The new mayor said she already filed a request for the construction of a building at the mangrove farm that will serve as the site for bird watching.

Meanwhile, an investor has expressed interest of setting up a zip-line across the irrigation dam situated in the mountainous area.

Yamamoto said she believes tourism can be a major driver in the economic development of Bani.

ANGEL CAVE

Following the creation of the tourism office, an exploration of the “Angel Cave” was undertaken and Yamamoto said they were surprised to find that the rock formations in the first one-kilometer inside the cave are “as beautiful as that of the Underground River in Palawan”.

“Comparing it to the scenery inside the Angel Cave, they are almost the same,” she said based on photos presented to her by the exploration team.

The mayor plans to enlist the ‘Angel cave’ under the UNESCO protected sites to preserve and protect it.

A “Pakwan Festival” will be staged in February next year to promote the town’s famous watermelon produce.

She noted that due to the lack of promotional efforts for watermelon, producers are often short-changed by middlemen who have control of the market.

“We will protect farmers from unscrupulous middlemen and give them (farmers) a suitable market,” she said.

The local government also plans to renovate the town hall, public market and the town.– Dada Martin and PIA1-Pangasinan/VHSDada Martin Austria
