Tighter watch leads to higher market collection
DAILY collection from the operations of public markets in Dagupan may yet save the day for Emergency Workers (EWs) and technical consultants hired under the new administration of Mayor Belen Fernandez.
The mayor said the market income, which has been steadily increasing due to tighter monitoring, will be used to pay for the salary of EWs who have yet to be compensated for their services in July.
The market collection was also partly used to pay for the wages for July of 442 EWs hired under the previous administration.
The city government collects cash tickets from traders and stall rental fee from those leasing permanent space.
Noting the poor market collection under the past administration, Fernandez set up a new system that led to dramatic increase in cash ticket collections by more that 200 per cent.
The mayor described the new system as “like employing security guards looking out for the other security guards”.
Some of the newly-hired EWs are tasked to cross-check the issuance and collection of market tickets.
“Imagine, they were collecting only P7,000 daily in cash tickets before. Now, they are collecting P20,000 daily and at times P80,000 daily,” Fernandez said.
This month of August, she said, collection of market tickets has surprisingly increased despite the consecutive typhoons and rains that have caused flooding.
Fernandez herself makes frequent unannounced inspections in the city market to check on the performance of the collectors and look into the conditions of the vendors.
