LINGAYEN—Soon, Pangasinenses need not travel to La Union or Pasay City to secure a passport. A regional office of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) will open at the Robinson’s mall in Calasiao by the fourth quarter of the year.

The new office, a part of the DFA’s mobile e-passporting project, will complement the existing DFA Regional Consular Office in San Fernando City, La Union.

Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) Member Ranjit Shahani, who sponsored the resolution asking for the establishment of a consular extension office in the province, said with the opening of the DFA office in Calasiao, the provincial government is hoping more Pangasinenses will acquire a passport.

“We want to encourage people to have passports. Passports are not just travel documents, they are means of identification. In fact, they’re more effective as a notary public than a cedula (community tax certificate),” Shahani said.

H said the decision to establish the office in Robinsons saved the provincial government the cost of building an infrastructure.
