TWO high school students from the Pangasinan Universal Institute in Dagupan City brought home gold and bronze medals from the 9th International Mathematics Competition held in Singapore from Aug. 2 to 5.

Mark Davidson Cua, 15, junior high school student, won a gold medal while his schoolmate, Sean Christian Lim, 13, freshman, won a bronze.

The international competition was participated in by 11 countries, including host country Singapore, China, Indonesia, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Iran, India and Philippines.

Cua and Lim said they were part of the 223-member of the Philippine delegation who trained under the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines.

Cua said the most important thing he learned from joining such competition is “to always aim to be the best because in every contest, there could be someone who would emerge better than you”.

Lim, for his part, said his self-confidence is boosted by his experiences in such competitions.
