Hyacinth mound spells livelihood for Sta. Babara

STA. BARBARA—When a large volume of water hyacinth were carried by strong currents last week during typhoon Labuyo along the Sinocalan River and clogged the waterway at Ventenilla Bridge and a small dam at the national highway in Barangay Ventenilla here, that proved to be a blessing for this town.

But instead of treating it as a bane, Mayor Carlito Zaplan immediately had the plants hauled out by truckloads and these are now being dried to be used as raw material for production of indigenous bags under a livelihood project of the municipal government.

The use of water hyacinth for bag production was exemplified by the city of Las Piñas under the initiative of then Rep. Cynthia Villar, now senator.

About 250 dump truck loads of water hyacinth were collected using heavy equipment owned by the mayor who is a building contractor.

Zaplan said they temporarily dumped the water hyacinth in a vacant lot he owns in Ventenilla.–Eva Visperas
