Gov. Espino urges youth to fight illegal drugs and protect the environment

LINGAYEN—Governor Amado T. Espino Jr. further exhorted hundreds of Pangasinan State University (PSU) scholars to fight the proliferation illegal drugs and promote the love and care for mother earth last July 26 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) Gym.

Espino urged some 800 scholars during the the “Kabataan ng Pangasinan, kapit-bisig laban sa droga at para sa Kalikasan” event saying, “We wish for the commitment of each one of you for this endeavor and I know that the scholars for the provincial government will never fail us for the good of everybody: for yourself, for your family, for your friends, for your community, for your province, and for your country.”

“We have been doing our work on anti-drugs silently,” said Espino in an interview with the media during the event as he assured that he is now in close coordination with the Philippine Drugs Enforcement Agency (PDEA) intesify anti-drug campaign through prevention, apprehension and prosecution.

As the principal author of the Dangerous Drugs Act when he was still a solon, Espino said that an anti-drug campaign is a serious matter and should not be taken lightly.

Likewise, Bugallon Mayor Jumel Espino, who was also present in event, declared that he is an advocate against illegal drugs as he urged the youth to be addicted not to illegal drugs but to studying, to being respectful to parents, and to other ways that help one’s family and school.

In addition, Vice Governor Jose Ferdinan Calimlim Jr. remarked, “Itong gabing ito ay isang gabi ng pasasalamat, isang gabi para sa lahat ng kabataan para inyong malaman ang power of the youth: the power to say ‘yes’ when it is good, to say ‘no’ when it is bad…”

Espino told the scholars about the administration’s ongoing programs for the protection of the environment such as river cleanups, tree planting, fingerlings dispersal and seedlings distribution, among others.

Further, the governor also announced the imminent tourism-related, environmental, and economical venture at the Agno River, in the area of Bañaga, Bugallon.

Espino told the youths of his plan together with his son, Mayor Jumel Espino, to develop the area as a center of water sports activities.

Meanwhile, Espino commended the present good academic standards of the PSU citing that PSU Urdaneta City has a 100% passing rate in Mechanical Engineering. “Hindi kayo dapat magsisi na nasa PSU kayo,” he then told the students.

The provincial government provides financial assistance to over 1,200 students in the nine PSU campuses namely Lingayen, Infanta, Alaminos City, Binmaley, Bayambang, Asingan, Urdaneta City, Sta. Maria, and San Carlos City.

The event was made more notable by a candle-lighting ceremony and covenant signing.

“We shall always renew our commitment to uphold the vision the vision of Pangasinan as the best place to visit, work, live, and raise a family and the mission to make Pangasinan No. 1,” thus states the covenant.

There were also lectures on drugs and drug abuse awareness; and on environment by a PDEA and Office of the Provincial Agriculturist officers, respectively.

The following day, Espino led the coastal clean-up at the Lingayen Beachfront, the tree planting of 800 acacia mangium at Domalandan elementary school and dispersal of 10,000 tilapia fingerlings to the Agno River held in Banaga, Bugallon. (PIO)
