LINGAYEN–“With your combined brilliance for sound education, I am delighted by the mission of this assembly which will usher in a new perspective in our continuing quest for excellence in education.”

Thus said Governor Amado T. Espino Jr. before about 200 heads of English departments and district English coordinators in public and private elementary and secondary schools of Department of Education (DepEd) Pangasinan 1 who participated in a seminar sponsored by the Filipino-American Educators Foundation (FAMEF) on August 16 at the Provincial Training and Development Center, here.

Espino lauded “the relationship that binds the government and educators, a one-of-a-kind distinction that mirrors mutual and genuine advocacy to reach out to the global needs and set of priorities of our people, primarily the youth.”

He also commended FAMEF’s efforts to harmonize the culture of the east and of the west, a kind of acculturation that enriches the global spirit and responds to the needs of the future.

The FAMEF delegation was headed by Dr. Pilar Pascual with members Drs. Gloria Ysmael Adams, Pedro Ramos, Teresita Salvador, Eva Robles, Josefina Cunanan, Erlinda Usabal and Josephine Cruz.

Schools Division Superintendent Alma Ruby Torio said DepEd Pangasinan 1 is very fortunate to have the FAMEF while the entire DepEd system is embarking on curriculum enhancement, transforming teachers to become more effective and efficient educators.

“The hardwork of our teachers guarantee every child in the province the best quality education,” Torio said.

Towards this end, she mentioned the significant investments of the governor to school children and teachers such as repair and construction of school buildings, providing of instructional materials and school supplies and various trainings for teachers, among others.

“For all these, we can say that the vision of Pangasinan 1 in serving quality education is easily attained amidst all the challenges, issues and concerns because like the governor, we believe, ‘nothing is impossible and everything is possible,’ she averred.

DepEd NCR’s former Chief of Special Education and Private School Consultant Eva Robles, who served as master of ceremony, applauded the massive transformation of the province, citing that when they attended the 1995 Palarong Pambansa hosted by the province, the image of Pangasinan was really far different.

The one-day seminar sought to improve communication skills with tact, diplomacy and poise; deepen and internalize one’s passion for teaching; demonstrate the characteristics and personal qualities of a 21st century teacher; and to know, understand and actualize academic opportunities for teachers.

A special topic on obtaining a US visa and be able to travel and settle down and earn a living in the US was also tackled.

Since 1989, more than a hundred Filipino educators were sent by the FAMEF to the US, including Priscilla Victorio, District Supervisor in DepEd Pangasinan 2, and another principal, also from Pangasinan. (PIO/Mark Gerry Naval Oblanca)
