WITH the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections coming in October, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Region 1 is now on alert on the possible abuse by potential candidates of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program’s (4Ps) for political intent.

DSWD Region 1 Director Marcelo Nicomedes Castillo warned barangay election aspirants, particularly the incumbent who are eyeing re-election, amidst allegations that they misled 4Ps beneficiaries about possibly being dropped from the program if they do not support certain candidates.

“These unjust political strategies threatening beneficiaries to gain their favor are but evident only in few isolated areas in the Region,” Castillo said.

The Family Development Sessions are being used as the venue to discuss these immediate concerns through DSWD’s Pantawid Pamilya staff and civil society organizations, partner non-government organizations.

Simultaneous and continuous advocacy on the dos and don’ts and their rights as 4Ps beneficiaries and voters are being carried out.

DSWD will again launch the “Bawal ang Epal Dito” campaign, which is aimed at protecting the Pantawid Pamilya and its beneficiaries from being used by politicians and groups for political advancement, Castillo added.

Beneficiaries of 4Ps and concerned individuals could send a text to the Pantawid Pamilya hotline 0918-912-2813 or visit their nearest City/Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officers for such concerns.—Eva Visperas
