MOST BUSINESS-FRIENDLY

THE cities of Urdaneta and Dagupan and the municipality of Calasiao have been named most business friendly in Region 1 by the North Luzon Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NLCCI).

Nelson Yuchongtian, NLCCI vice president, said the three bested all other areas based on indicators set by the investors such as the size of population as consumers, the facilities available in the area, employment rate, and political climate, which covers transparency and accountability in governance.

“We considered the timeframe in a certain locality on how long they processed permits and how convenient it is for us to get those permits,” Yuchongtian said.

He said the three meet the expectations of investors as shown by the increase in the number of business establishments in these areas.

Urdaneta, Dagupan and Calasiao town are recipients of the Seal of Good Housekeeping, an award given by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to best performing local government units in the country.

The cost of electricity and water and other means of business were also taken into consideration, Yuchongtian said.

CONSUMER-DRIVEN

Yuchongtian pointed out that the trend in the trade and industry in the region is on consumption as the manufacturing sector slows down.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) supported Yuchongtian’s statement saying the export industry in the province has been stagnant due to a decrease in the demand for products such as processed meats, gift items and toys, which are the main export commodities of the province.

Meanwhile, the private sector submitted a manifesto to the Regional Development Council (RDC) urging the government to build economic zones such as airports and seaports that will help boost the influx of investments in the region.

The RDC, for its part, has adopted and passed the manifesto vowing to make every effort to align their plans with the business sector’s request.—Dada Martin Austria
