Appointment of new provincial police chief rushed
LINGAYEN—The provincial board will take up a proposed resolution Monday urging the National Police Commission (Napolcom), through its chairman, Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas, to speed up the process of appointing the province’s new police chief.
A list of three nominees has been submitted by Police Director General Alan Purisima to Napolcom for approval, from which Governor Amado Espino Jr. will be able to choose the replacement of Police Senior Supt. Marlou Chan.
The resolution authored by 6th District Board Member Ranjit Ramos Shahani was supposed to have been tackled last Monday but the board session was cancelled due to Typhoon Labuyo.
AWARDS FOR PPO
Meanwhile, as the controversy over Chan’s appointment lingers, the Provincial Police Office reaped awards in the 112th Police Regional Office 1 (PRO1) Police Service Anniversary Celebration on Aug. 16 held at the Camp Oscar Florendo in San Fernando City, La Union.
The Pangasinan PPO received the Achievement Award in the Campaign Against Organized Crimes, Achievement Award in the Campaign On the Arrest of Most Wanted Persons, Recognition for the unit with the most number of search warrants implemented during the May 2013 election period, Recognition for the unit with the most number of firearms accounted for during the May 2013 election period, and Recognition for the unit with the most number of apprehended gun ban violators during the May 2013 election period (with Dagupan City Police Station).
Other police stations were also given recognition, including Alaminos City, Achievement Award For the Solution of Sensational Criminal Case; San Carlos City, Recognition for the unit with the highest percentage on compliance on documentation phase vis-à-vis complete documents (Oplan Katok) during the May 2013 election period; and Sto. Tomas, Recognition for the unit with the most number of renewed firearms (Oplan Katok) during the May 2013 election period.
Chan said he is both elated and grateful for the recognition to their efforts in maintaining peace and order in the province, especially during the May elections, despite questions on his appointment hurled by Espino, the provincial board, and majority of local officials.
“I told my men to continue to work and not to be demoralized by issues thrown against me and the PNP as a whole,” Chan said.
There is a pending case filed by Espino in court seeking the removal of Chan and the provincial board passed a resolution declaring him persona non grata for his alleged political bias in the elections.–Eva Visperas
