THE Commission on Elections (Comelec)-Dagupan is holding a voter’s registration on July 22- 31 in preparation for the October 28 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.

City Election Officer Ericson Oganiza said the venue will be announced later since it has yet to find a spacious venue in anticipation of the influx of registrants, especially those aged 15 to 17 for the SK poll.

Oganiza also reminded registered SK voters who will be 18 years old by the October 28 election to register as regular voters.

He said the number of SK registered voters in the last elections in 2010 was low in terms of percentage of the total population.

He pointed out that there should be at least 31,000 SK members in Dagupan given its 31 barangays.

In 2010, there were only 4, 276 SK registered voters, of whom only 3, 800 voted.

“Many are studying outside the province, and could not avail of the voter’s registration while those who are studying here could not also register because the registration is usually scheduled on school days,” explained Oganiza as he remains hopeful that the youth will take the weekend of the 10-day registration as an opportunity to register.

The Comelec will also process transfers, reactivation and change of voters’ status during the activity.–Dada Martin Austria
