Sto. Tomas: Certified drug-free for 40 years

STO. TOMAS—This town takes pride in not just having a Guinness World Record for longest barbecue for its 1,559 meters of grilled glutinous corn during its first Corn Festival in 2008, but a long 40-year record of being free from illegal drugs.

The new mayor, Timoteo “Dick” Villar III, has vowed to maintain this distinction as he posted a sign warning drug pushers who may be contemplating to operate in the town.

The mayor said he intends to keep the legacy of his family started his uncle, now Secretary Antonio Villar Jr. of the Dangerous Drugs Board, and continuing with the latter’s wife Vivien, Sto. Tomas has remained a drug-free town.

“This is for the welfare of our townmates in Sto. Tomas. I am sustaining it with our intensified dissemination of barangay and school-based information on illegal drugs to totally eradicate it (the problem),” the mayor said.

The posting of tarpaulins last week in every barangay bearing messages against illegal drugs and holding of forums with the participation of different agencies are part of the campaign to remind the townsfolk to help in sustaining the town’s drug-free status.

“We do this despite the fact that our town is already certified drug-free,” Villar said.

He said he is simply warning the “misguided” who will dare start their start their operations in his town that “There is no sacred cow, whether relatives or friends, in this fight against illegal drugs. ”—Eva Visperas
