GdV prioritizes welfare of farmers, fisherfolks
MANGALDAN–“The interest of the country’s farmers and fisherfolks will be my top priority in the 16th Congress,” said 4th District Rep. Gina de Venecia a few days before she resumes work at the House of Representatives.
“They (farmers and fisherfolks) represent more than seventy percent of our workforce and they’re the country’s main food producers, yet they remain as among the lowest earners… There needs to have an improved policy support, ” the lady solon said.
De Venecia seeks to strengthen the crop insurance system to protect produce such as palay, corn, high value commercial crops, livestock, aquaculture and fishery products, agro-forestry crops and even forest plantations against losses arising from natural calamities and fortuitous events.
House Bill 6883, which she co-authored with Rep. Walden Bello, was already approved by the Lower House in the 15th Congress and is due for review and approval by the Senate.
It seeks the establishment of Philippine Insurance Corporation under the Department of Agriculture to ensure that farmers and fisherfolks will be safeguarded against financial losses due to typhoons, floods, draughts, earthquake, volcanic eruption as well as plant and fish diseases and pest, rodent, vermin and insect infestations.
De Venecia has also allotted a sizeable portion of her countrywide development fund (CDF) for her agricultural programs in the 4th District.
Two months ago, she distributed 4,000 sacks of certified palay seeds to the farmers of San Fabian and San Jacinto and recently gave out some 125 motorized irrigation pumps to the farmer representatives of San Fabian, Manaoag, Mangaldan and San Jacinto.
In the meantime, her bill that seeks the establishment of a modern fish port in Dagupan has already been approved by Congress.
