Fernandez proposes scheme to protect Dagupan bangus

MAYOR Belen Fernandez has called on members of the local consignacion and fishpond owners to close ranks and study the feasibility of selling the homegrown Dagupan bangus four days a week and the other three days for the local bangus mixed with those coming from other towns of Pangasinan.

She made the call when she invited members of the consignacion and fishpond owners to her office last Wednesday after noting that the Dagupan bangus, known for its superior quality, were being sold in the market with the same ceiling as those originating from Binmaley and western Pangasinan.

“There should be a close linkage between our consignacion and the local bangus producers,” said Fernandez, adding that the only way to prevent the manipulation of prices at the expense of Dagupan bangus is to schedule market days for the local milkfish and those originating from other towns.

Noting that the Dagupan fish market is where local producers and those from Western Pangasinan are bringing their products daily before they can be shipped to Metro Manila,

Fernandez said it would be unfair if the Dagupan bangus is priced the same as with other milkfish products from elsewhere.

Noting the low price of bangus nowadays, the new mayor appealed to the consignacion members to get rid of unhealthy cut-throat competition which is not favorable to the Dagupan bangus.

There is also a need to ban the entry of alien bangus or those coming from Pampanga, Bulacan and Laguna that sometimes smell like mud and again being shipped to Manila where these are marketed as Dagupan bangus.

A report said milkfish traders from Manila are unloading their products daily along the roadsides in Dagupan before bringing the bulk of their load to Baguio as they know they are not welcomed at the Dagupan City Fish Market.

“In view of this, which had been going on for years, there is now a need to adopt a protective policy for the Dagupan bangus, otherwise the local bangus will lose its demand,” Fernandez said.

The mayor added that the city government will pursue the project of branding the Dagupan bangus and is mulling to create franchised outlets in Manila and Baguio wet markets where the Dagupan bangus will be  exclusively sold.
