Chessfest in Sta. Barbara, Oct. 19-20

ELATED by the success of the 2013 Pangasinan Invitational Chess Tournament held at Robinson’s Place Pangasinan in Calasiao last May 4 and 5, the Pangasinan Chess League (PCL) headed by newly re-elected president Don Sison will hold another open competition in the province on October 19 and 20.

PCL event director and spokesman Allen Garcia said the coming two-day tournament will be called “2nd Sta. Barbara Open Chess Classic” and will be conducted at the town’s Agricultural Training Institute-Regional Training Center at barangay Tebag East.

The Sta. Barbara municipal government under Mayor Carlito Zaplan and the Sangguniang Bayan are the principal sponsors of the event

Garcia told The PUNCH that the event will be done in two categories, the open and 14-under, with cash prizes plus trophies up for grabs.

He added that more than 100 wood-pushers from all over the country are expected to participate, led by six Filipino Grandmasters Oliver Barbosa, Darwin Laylo, Mark Paragua, John Paul Gomez, Richard Bitoon and Joey Antonio.
