LINGAYEN—Pangasinan’s fisheries industry is getting a boost through a development program initiated by the provincial government in partnership with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan on its first regular session last July 8 approved Resolution No. 3-2013authorizing Governor Amado Espino Jr. to enter into a memorandum of agreement with BFAR for the implementation of the Fisheries Industry Enhancement Program, for the development of sustainable aquaculture/mariculture programs for fisherfolks and other stakeholders.

“The program for Fisheries Enhancement will not only address aquaculture sector but also the fishery sector. We will bring the fishing ground of our fisherfolks closer to our shoreline,” said BFAR Regional 1 Director Nestor Domenden, who was present at the session.

The BFAR director cited the program’s calculated production of tilapia, one of their target areas, of an additional 1,400 metric tons annually, giving employment opportunities to 60 families.

The resolution, authored by SP member Danilo Uy, obliges BFAR and the provincial government to collaborate in helping the aquaculture/mariculture of the province attain inclusive growth among its constituents through technical expertise and financial support.

Under the MOA, BFAR is tasked to expand aquaculture/mariculture production areas, improve its post-harvest through infrastructure facilities, production practices and product storage, handling, distribution, and marketing.

It is also tasked to co-share/provide financial support with an initial funding of P3 million.

The provincial government, on the other hand, will be responsible for management and regulation and allocation of areas for the establishment of viable aquaculture/mariculture and related infrastructure facilities.–Johanne R. Macob
