BM Libunao cries foul over “missing fund” allegation

LINGAYEN—Board Member Mojamito Libunao is mulling libel charges against a local paper for what he calls a malicious publication of a story alleging that he and his wife, former San Fabian Mayor Irene Libuano, have not accounted for a missing P2.3 million from the municipality’s fund.

Libunao, himself a lawyer, said he is consulting with his lawyer to determine if there is ground for a libel case against the writer and editor of the North West Sun newspaper and the reporter in the story.

“There is malice in the publication of this banner headline since it was done without publishing our side,” said BM Libunao, who was re-elected last May 13. His wife lost in her re-election bid.

Libunao, in a privilege speech during the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) regular session last July 15, said that the local newspaper never sought their side but printed a picture of him and his wife beside the article.

Further, photocopies of the article were allegedly being circulated in the municipal hall, market, and schools in San Fabian, claimed the Board Member.

Libunao explained that the P2.3 million in question involves the gross revenue of the local government-operated PTA beach resort, which is actually some Php2.5 million, from which operating expenses will be deducted.

While some board members had queries and comments on Libunao’s speech, the discussion was terminated as the board ruled that it was not the right forum for the matter. – Johanne R. Macob
