ROSALES–A 13- foot Philippine map made from oyster shells was the main attraction in this year’s celebration of Independence Day at the SM City Rosales.

Engr. Jersey Mendoza, SM City Rosales mall manager, said the use of the shells is intended to promote oysters, one of the most abundant products in the western part of Pangasinan.

Two years ago, a Philippine flag made of colorful bite-sized puto, a famous product of Calasiao town, was featured during the Independence Day celebration.

The three-dimensional 13 feet by 4.5 feet map, painted in the red-yellow-blue colors of the Philippine flag, is made from more than 6,800 oyster shells.

The map, which will be on display until June 30, has dove on top painted white to complete the colors of the Filipino flag.

Mendoza said the SM malls want to contribute in preserving and making people understand the essence of Independence Day.

“People are happy to have their pictures taken there because it is unique where oyster shells commonly thrown away can be made into something meaningful,” Mendoza said.—Eva Visperas
