Fernandez assures no power disruption in schools

THE city government of Dagupan, now under Mayor-elect Belen Fernandez, has re-aligned funds and prioritized the payment of unsettled bills to the Dagupan Electric Corporation (Decorp) for the power consumption of public schools from February to May totaling close to P1 million.

Funds were sourced by Fernandez from the mayor’s office but she stressed that the solution is a band-aid solution and the ensuing electric consumption of the schools from July to December will continue to pose a problem for the city.

“Our worry is the next six months from July to December,” said Fernandez who has uncovered the dismal cash position of Dagupan left by the administration of outgoing Mayor Benjamin Lim.

She said the funding for the unpaid electric bills of the public schools came from the non-office account in the mayor’s office which can be realigned and re-appropriated by the Sangguniang Panlungsod as a supplemental budget.

Nonetheless, the new mayor, who has called for strict belt-tightening measures at city hall, vowed that she will not allow public schools to bear the brunt of the fiscal mismanagement of the Lim administration.

“Under my watch, I will not let the pupils and students shoulder the burden of contributing money to pay for the electric consumption of their schools,” said Fernandez.

She said she will likely tap remaining fund under the “travel” item in the office of the mayor.
