Detainee commits suicide inside Mangaldan jail
MANGALDAN—A detainee accused of murdering his wife allegedly committed suicide inside his cell at the Mangaldan Police Station Monday.
Leandro Presto, 42, resident of PNR West, Barangay Salay this town who was charged with parricide filed at the Prosecutor’s Office, Dagupan City was temporarily detained at the police station pending issuance of his commitment order to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.
The police reported that Presto complained of severe stomachache, loose bowel movement and vomiting and was brought to the Region 1 Medical Center in Dagupan City for medical treatment but died Sunday evening.
A report from a local television station here quoted a daughter of Presto as saying that when she visited her dad, he told her that he asked a minor to buy him poison in exchange for money.
The police are still investigating what really caused Presto’s death.
A week before Presto’s death, he allegedly climbed his cell’s ceiling and jumped head down.
Presto reportedly experienced depression due to his wife’s death and he was not allowed last week to attend her interment due to security reasons since he is the primary suspect in his wife’s killing.—Eva Visperas
