Dengue cases down by more than 50%
DENGUE AWARENESS MONTH
DENGUE cases in the province from January to May 31, 2013 dropped by more than 50 percent compared to the same period last year.
This year, the Provincial Health Office (PHO) recorded 646 dengue, less than half of the almost 1,400 cases last year.
Eugene Paragas, dengue program coordinator of the PHO, attributed the decrease to the year-round campaign against dengue and effective information dissemination of the provincial government’s health units.
“Because of these campaigns, people have undertaken preventive measures like using kulambo or mosquito nets as well as keeping their surroundings clean, destroying possible breeding grounds for mosquitos,” Paragas said.
THREE CITIES
Central Pangasinan recorded the most number of dengue cases where the cities of Dagupan, Urdaneta and San Carlos City plus other big municipalities are situated.
Paragas said the PHO continues with its extensive campaign and information dissemination, especially now with the onset of the rainy season during which the escalation of dengue expected.
“We will not be lax, in fact we did not and will not stop with our measures to ensure that nobody in the province will become another victim of dengue,” he said.
In observance of Dengue Awareness Month this June, the PHO lined up activities in accordance with this year’s theme, “Stop, Look and Listen: Aksyon Barangay Kontra Dengue Pagtibayin”, stressing on community participation.
