EIGHT private higher educational institutions in Pangasinan were granted by the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) the authority to increase tuition fees by at least 11.99 percent starting this school year.

The eight are: St. Columban’s College in Lingayen; San Carlos College and Palaris College in San Carlos City, Lyceum Northwestern University-Urdaneta City, Our Lady of Manaoag College in Manaoag, PASS College in Alaminos City, STI Dagupan and University of Pangasinan in Dagupan.

Dr. Caridad Abuan, CHEd regional director, said the eight are among the 15 HEIs out of 22 applicants in Region 1 given approval to increase tuition fees.

None of the State Colleges and Universities in Region 1 sought an increase.

Abuan explained that under CHEd guidelines, 70 per cent of the increased tuition fees must be utilized by HEIs for increasing the salaries of faculty and non-teaching staff; 20 percent for improvement of school facilities; and 10 percent to compensate their return on investment (ROI).

Abuan noted that before an HEI can apply for a tuition fee increase, the college or university administration must first conduct consultation with stakeholders comprising of members of the student body, the student council and alumni and present the amount of tuition fee increase that they intend to impose.
