3 local chessers off to Thailand joust

PANGASINAN’s highest ranked and FIDE Master Haridas Pascua of Mangatarem, with National Master Giovanni Mejia of Labrador and John Ruiz Bravo of Lingayen enplaned to Chiang Mai, Thailand on June 5 to vie for trophies in the 14th ASEAN + Age Group Chess Championships 2013 plums.

Pascua, 19, with an elo rating of 2367 will be competing in the 20-and-under category while Mejia (2146) is scheduled to tussle in the open under-16 division and Bravo in the 14-under class.

Pascua and Mejia placed sixth and 12th, respectively, during the 2013 Pangasinan Invitational Chess Tournament in the open division won by Grandmaster Oliver Barbosa (2513) held at Robinsons Place in Calasiao last May 4 and 5 while Bravo (1828) landed 15th in the 14-under category.

The three Pangasinenses will be joined by 19 other non-Grandmaster wood-pushers from all over the country representing the Philippines headed by 2013 Philippine National Games champion International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia.–JAGJr.
