BINMALEY—Pangasinan’s senior citizens and youth eagerly participated in the midterm elections last May 13, casting their votes for local government positions and 12 senatorial slots.

There was Emiliana Aquino who went to her designated precinct for her ballot despite being frail and suffering from poor eyesight at age 79.

Aquino arrived at precinct 197-A, assisted by her granddaughter Rosalie Andaya, with a list of her preferred candidates in hand.

Ginawa namin ‘yon (the list) kagabi at ‘yon ang dinikta ko kay Rosalie noong bumuboto na ako,” she narrated.

Aquino said she picked her candidates based on their platforms, which she monitored through television.

Pinapanuod ko sa TV yong mga balita tungkol sa mga kandidato,” she said.

Senior citizens and persons with disabilities were given due priority at the polling precincts as ordered by the Commission on Elections.

FIRST TIME VOTERS

Meanwhile, the young, who comprised majority of the voting population in Pangasinan, also came out to exercise their right and responsibility to vote with a keen purpose of putting in place leaders for good governance.

Ariston Neypes, Jr., a 19-year-old student, said the “candidates’ achievements as well as their platforms” were his basis in choosing the candidates he voted for.

Hindi ‘yong puro poster lang o dahil sa nagbigay ng pera, dapat iboto ‘yong may ginawa at may gagawin pa para sa sambayanang Pilipino,” said Neypes.

Neypes, a first-time voter from San Isidro Sur here, said he was excited to take part in the elections, which he believes is credible, particularly with the use of precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machine as it means lesser human intervention. (PIA-1- Pangasinan/AMM)
