LINGAYEN—Thousands of swine, chicken, and goat raisers in the province had fun learning new livestock raising practices at the Pilmico Poultry and Livestock Expo held at the LRO Compound in the Provincial Capitol on May 23-24.

The second in a series being held nationwide and organized in cooperation with the provincial government and the Department of Agriculture, the expo featured trade exhibits, seminars, and games.

“The crowd is overwhelming,” said Hendel Cabral, vice president of Pilimico, during the opening.

Pilmico, a subsidiary of the Aboitiz Equity Venture’s food group, chose Pangasinan as the venue for its second installment of the expo because the province has biggest number of backyard raisers in Luzon.

“Pangasinan has the biggest population of backyard swine inventory in Luzon followed by Camarines Sur,” said Pilmico marketing manager John Paul Pangilinan.

On the part of the provincial government, Governor Amado Espino Jr., represented by Vice Governor Jose Ferdinand Calimlim Jr., thanked the company for choosing Pangasinan as a venue for the benefit the province’s backyard raisers.

GAMES AND SEMINARS

The event had three main elements: pagkain, palaro, palabas.

For the pagkain, a food kiosk exhibited the delicacies of the province.

Palaro included different games such as raffles, aerial sabong (cockfighting tourney), a kite-flying show featuring giant six-meter kites, piglet and duck catching, sack race, feeds takalan, egg catching; and jingle singing.

In the palabas, there were free seminars and live demos on swine and goat raising, game fowl breeding practices and technology and a pig and chicken show, other live animal displays, and exhibits participated in by various agricultural product manufacturers.

A parade and auction of pigs and chickens were provided by Pilmico to selected backyard raisers as piglets and chicks 48 days before the expo.

Part of the proceeds of the auction was given to the raisers while a bigger portion was donated to the Provincial Daycare Association.–Johanne R. Macob
