Local volleybelles upset UE

INSPIRED by a supportive home crowd, the Lingayen-based Provincial Engineering Office duo of Casandra Lida and Melanie Carrera upset the highly-favored and nationally renowned University of the East tandem of Pia Sarmiento and Leuseth Dawis in the championship round of the 2013 Petron Ladies’ Beach Volleyball Tournament held at the Capitol Beach Front in Lingayen during the May 1st celebration of Pista’y Dayat.

The local duo won in two straight heats, 21-18 and 22-20.

Lida and Carrera earlier easily defeated the team of Pangasinan School of Arts and Trades, 21-12, 21-5, while UE beat fellow Manila-based FEU, 21-13, 21-17, in the semis

In the championship game, Lida and Carrera found themselves in trouble in the second set at 20-20 after leading by two points, 20-18. But they persevered and capitalized on two consecutive errors of UE’s Dawis.

The host town volleybelles survived the tension -filled match and captured their first ever Pista’y Dayat crown which was greeted with loud cheering of appreciation from the spectators.—JAGJr.
