GM Barboza tops Pangasinan chess tilt

GRANDMASTER Oliver Barboza cooled off in his last game after a searing start and deliberately drew his final move against FIDE master Haridas Pascua, collecting a tournament high 6.5 points to top the 2013 Pangasinan Invitational Chess Tournament open division held on May 4-5 at Robinsons Place Pangasinan in Calasiao.

The world renowned Barboza of Taytay City, enjoying a FIDE elo-rating 2513, beat fellow GM Marikina City’s best Darwin Laylo (2500) by half point and clinched the P10,000 top prize plus a huge trophy.

National master Ronald Llavanes of Pampanga (2280) dislodged Asian prominent GM and Quezon City son Mark Paragua (2555) for third garnering 5.5 points while international master Emmanuel Senador of Manila (2337) finished fifth.

Laylo, Llavanes, Paragua and Senador pocketed P7,000, P5,000, P4,000 and P3,000, respectively plus trophy apiece.

Local bet Pascua (2367) of Mangatarem placed sixth.

In the 14 under category, Istraelito Rilloraza of Las Piñas City accumulated a division high 6.5 marks to win the P5,000 top prize with trophy while Romulo Curioso of Nueva Ecija placed second with 5.5 points worth P3,000 plus trophy.

John Marx Anastacio of Mangaldan landed third with five points and received P2,000 and also with trophy.

There were 87 participants in the open category and 41 in the under-14.–JAGJr.
