PRISONERS serving time or waiting arraignment in the five district jails in Pangasinan will still be able to exercise their right to suffrage and preparations have been made for casting their votes on May 13 along with the rest of the country’s voters.

Atty. Marino Salas, provincial elections supervisor, led a seminar last May 6 for the members of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) and special board of election inspectors (SBEIs) to be assigned to the prisoner-voters to discuss the arrangements.

Each of the 493 prisoners’ respective ballots from the barangays where they are registered will be brought to the jails for voting, then the ballots will be brought back to the precincts to be fed to the Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machines.

The detainees who will be given the chance to vote on May 13th are from Balungao (83), Burgos (93), Dagupan City (146), San Carlos City (90), and Urdaneta City (81).

Based on ComElec data as of November 19, 2012, there are 1,651,814 registered voters in the province, making Pangasinan one of the top four provinces in terms of voters population.-Johanne R. Macob
