OFWs’ families warned vs. budol-budol gang

FAMILIES of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) have been warned by the Provincial Employment Services Office (PESO) against con men known to be members of the “budol-budol” gang.

PESO chief Alex Ferrer said in a forum that the gang has recently been targeting OFW families in their new modus operandi, informing the family members that their OFW relative has been involved in an accident abroad.

Another modus of the gang is sending a text message asking family members to give money in exchange for a package supposedly sent by their kin abroad.

Ferrer cited a family of an OFW from Rosales who reported that a person, suspected to be a budol-budol member, asked them for money supposedly to pay for the hospitalization of their OFW relative who has been in an accident and sent back to the Philippines.

The family members from Rosales immediately verified the information and found it was untrue.

The OFW desk and crisis hotline in the province was launched by Governor Amado Espino Jr. in 2011 to assist Pangasinenses working abroad and their families in the province.

Ferrer also encouraged those who were already victimized by this gang to report the incident to his office so proper action can be taken.

About 100, 000 documented OFWS from Pangasinan are working in different countries. –Dada Martin
