Gina slams political dynasty backed by vote-buying

FOURTH District Rep. Gina de Venecia defines political dynasty as nothing but “treating one’s political bailiwick as one’s own business domain”.

This was made it clear by De Venecia when she was guest of honor and speaker during the 13th Jubilee of the Rotary Club of Uptown Dagupan headed by Belen Montessa at Blue Jam Restaurant on Guilig Street in Dagupan.

“I see that the issue of political dynasty coupled with vote-buying have taken center stage in this election, De Venecia said.

The congresswoman said that she and former Speaker Jose de Venecia  do not believe in the  practice of political dynasty because, according to her,  “lineage alone does not automatically confer competence and excellence in public office”.

De Venecia said that even the 1986 Constitution cautions the people against political dynasty, affirming that: “The State shall guarantee equal access to opportunities for public service and prohibit political dynasties as may be defined by law.”

However, because its limits and definition are not properly explained, political dynasties continue to thrive, she added.

At the same time, she said that money politics is another grave problem that demands serious concern.

This is all about vote-buying, which, sadly, has become very prevalent in local politics, she added.

“Kung ang pagbebenta ng boto ay magpapatuloy, baka po isang umaga, magising na lamang tayo na ang mga namumuno sa ating bayan ay puro mga drug lord at gambling lord,” said De Venecia.

But despite all these, one thing is certain— the winds of change is blowing towards the Daang Matuwid, which is being championed by President Noynoy Aquino, she added.

I am convinced, na hanggang may mga community leaders tulad nyo, who are instruments of change, at may malasakit sa bayan —- we shall persevere, we shall prevail, and we shall help transform Dagupan City.
