CSI’s success: A legacy of Jimmy L. Fernandez
BE sincere, be honest and don’t steal.
“These were the good virtues imparted by my father, Jimmy L. Fernandez, to his children that guided us through adulthood,” said mayoralty candidate Belen Fernandez during a campaign rally at the Bonuan Boquig High School gym Thursday night.
Belen said her father, who molded all his children to become strong and self-reliant, died at the young age of 49. With his demise, Belen was left with the duty of taking care of their mother and siblings so that they can continue their education and improve their lives.
With the legacy of Jimmy Fernandez, Belen then went on to establish the City Supermarket Inc. (CSI), which has now become the biggest retail outlet in Northern Luzon.
“Ipinagmamalaki ko po na ang CSI ay nagsimula sa iisang store at ngayon ay lumago at naging labing-pito na,” said Fernandez whose business acumen is respected not only in Pangasinan but the entire Northern Luzon.
A consistent top taxpayer per record of the Bureau of Internal Revenue district, Belen was listed as the No. 12 top taxpayer for 2012 while her opponent in the mayoralty race, incumbent Mayor Benjamin Lim, is in No. 60.
CSI is now the single biggest employer in Pangasinan.
Despite its numerous successes, the company has not forgotten that it owes its strength from the community where it started. Thus, CSI is channeling some of its resources in its corporate social responsibility projects to uplift the lives of the people of Dagupan.
Belen said CSI is currently helping 34 day care centers in the 31 barangays of Dagupan, starting even before she entered politics.
Other community-development of CSI are the yearly Children’s Congress, the yearly Sari-Sari Store Fair, the Jr. NBA, national collegiate basketball tournament and clinics, volleyball clinics, regular feeding programs inside and out of school for malnourished children, medical and dental missions, “Gulayan sa Barangay“, construction of elevated school rooms in cooperation with the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, and distribution of laptop computers to schools.
Fernandez acknowledged the fortune of the company is inspired by the Fernandez patriarch who taught his children never, ever to steal.
The CSI Stadia was named in honor of the Fernandez patriarch.
