Braid, Mananzan lead this year’s ASNA awardees
LINGAYEN– The provincial government recently honored this year’s five outstanding sons and daughters who have distinguished themselves in their respective fields of endeavor over the years through the prestigious annual 4th ASNA Awards.
ASNA Awards is being held not only to recognize remarkable achievements of Pangasinenses but also to inspire others to follow in the footsteps of those who have excelled prominently in their respective chosen arena.
Governor Amado Espino, Jr. presented the awards during formal ceremonies and grand ball held at the Sison Auditorium on April 5, 2013 as part of the Agew na Pangasinan (Pangasinan Day) celebration.
This year, there are two Balitok (gold) awardees, the main award: Dr. Florangel Rosario-Braid for Journalism and Development Communication and Sr. Mary John Mananzan, OSB for Women’s Studies and Feminist Activism.
Braid is a native of Dagupan City and is a well-revered communication specialist, media practitioner, scholar, development advocate and educator. She co-founded the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC) in 1980 and is now the president emeritus of the same institution.
Cited as one of The Outstanding Filipinos (TOFIL), Braid is a regular columnist of the Manila Bulletin.
Mananzan, born in Bayambang, is a Missionary Benedictine nun who established the Benedictine Program. She is also the first woman to graduate Summa Cum Laude from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy.
Presently, Mananzan is serving her second term as the prioress of the Missionary of Benedictine Sisters of the Manila Priory after serving as the president of the St. Scholastica’s College for two terms. She was cited as one of the 100 inspiring persons in the world by the Women Deliver during the International Women’s Day celebration in 2011.
ASNA awardees for 2013 are Romeo Castillo-Mananquil of Binmaley town for Visual Arts, Dr. Josephine Paed-Arquillano from San Carlos for Fisheries Education, and Dr./B. Gen. Antonio Laperal-Tamayo from Malasiqui for Education and Culture.
ASNA is an ancient word for ‘asin’ (salt) from which the province’s name was drawn. The word signifies good quality of a man’s character or his demeanor.
This year’s panel of judges was composed of Fr. Weng Escaño, Judge Emma Bauzon, Howie Cham, Arabella Arcinue, Gabriel Cardinoza, and Dr. Lydia Buduhan. (Johanne R. Macob)
