Abono: Rice smuggling in region abated

By April 14, 2013Business, News

RAMPANT rice smuggling in the northern Luzon area covering Regions 1 to 3 has been significantly abated, according to the Abono partylist, a group advocating the local agricultural sector.

Engr. Rosendo So, founding chairman of Abono party list, noted that deliveries of smuggled rice that used to be transported to these regions have started to decline more than two weeks ago.

“It has not been totally stopped but at least it was greatly minimized by as much as 30 percent,” said So whose group has launched an intensive campaign to stop the smuggling activities.

“Siguro nabawasan in a sense na kung dati pumapasok sa norte, binebenta na lang sa iba na medyo maluwag,” said So, noting that deliveries of smuggled rice continues in Metro Manila.

He said his group will meet to assess the situation and come out with a statement soon.

So thanked the media, Congress and the Senate for the initial success of the campaign against rice smuggling.—Eva Visperas
