LINGAYEN—Pangasinan recently received a P4million-worth of project grant an incentive for being one of the Top Rice-Producing Provinces, an award given the Department of Agriculture (DA).

The DA recognition came just after the province recently won a Hall of Fame award from the Regional Development Council for Local Government Practice Best Practices for its project “Accelerated Certified Rice Seed Production and Distribution in Pangasinan”.

DA Secretary Proceso J. Alcala led the conferment of the citation during the awarding ceremony for the 2nd Agri-Pinoy Rice Achievers’ Awards held last March 15 in line with the celebration of 2013 as the National Year of Rice.

Apart from the top ten rice-producing provinces, the top 48 municipalities and cities also received a P1million project grant each.

Awards for irrigators’ associations and individual farmers were also conferred.

“We initiated the Rice Achievers’ Awards as part of the DA’s interventions and incentive system to encourage LGUs, IAs and AEWs to contribute their share in increasing farmers’ harvest and incomes, and subsequently attain national rice sufficiency,” said Alcala earlier.

The awardees were chosen based on the following criteria: incremental rice harvest and average yield per hectare over 2011 levels, increase if any over 2012 target, amount of budget devoted to rice projects and initiatives, number of farmers benefited, and degree of rice seed utilization, among other factors.–Johanne R.
